This was a trip for Red Snapper & Amberjack. Onboard was Billy Young, Jason Jones, and Omar Vasquez. We started out hooking some decent Red Snapper and then went South for some Amberjack. We were successful getting some live bait but had trouble finding the Amberjack. Diving revealed there were not many out there. My first dive was on the MP243 Cutoff. I passed some AJs and Red Snapper up to look for a Grouper. I was able to find one at the bottom and then came up and found some African Pompano (APs) too. Omar made a dive on the MP244 Platform and got a Scamp Grouper. My second dive was on the MP265 Cutoff. Visibility was great but the fish were weak. Never even saw the first Amberjack. I was able to get a juvenile AP. Then Omar and I made a dive together on another Cutoff. Both Omar and I targeted a Cobia. Omar took a long shot on him and I went in contemplating a second shot but decided Omar should be able to land him. I was incorrect. I could not seem to get close enough to an AJ and settled for a Mangrove Snapper. Omar was able to get an Amberjack. We did some trolling for Wahoo & Mahi but only found Barracuda. The take home was not huge but the weather & visibility was nice so it made for a fun day out on the water. That is until we got within 4 miles of Horn Island when my lower unit came apart and we had to get towed in . Thank goodness for the deepwater mafia crew and a huge shout out to Alex & Sarah Mallette as well as Tommy Phelps for coming out to tow us in after dark. The trip encompassed 168 miles, 105 gallons of fuel, and 16.7 hours (towed in).
