Trip to Neptune Spar with Rebel, Hammerhead, and Tank on May 2, 2020© Photos Posted by Mark Primo Miller © Hi-Res Source
Amberjack season just opened the day before and we went out deep looking for some. We found lots of Amberjack, just not any monsters. We started at MP225 in about 250' of water. We were disappointed with all the murky fresh water on top, a result of opening spillways on the Mississippi River but landed a couple of AJs and a nice Cobia. We then decided to run out deep to the Neptune Spar, aka Beer Can Rig, out in 2,000 feet of water even though we knew that Amberjack do not inhabit those waters. We still had dirty water on top but it was nice and clear underneath it. Omar got a nice Graysby Grouper (Rock Hind) and I landed a Mangrove Snapper. We swung by the Callon Jacket and a pair of Super Pyramids in Alabama's Tatum - Winn South Zone. Lots of boats on the Callon but Rebel made a dive on the Pyramids and lost an estimated 50 pound Grouper which took his flopper. We then headed back toward home stopping at the VK385 cutoff where Tank made an attempt to dive it but barely missed it due to the current. Continuing on we passed VK340 that was flooded with boats and the V-Rig which had a single boat fishing it. We made a final stop checking the conditions at the Triple Rig which had better top-water than even the Beer Can Rig. It was not a monster killing day, but the weather was great and the seas were calm which always makes for a fun day on the water. The trip encompassed 205 miles, 127 gallons of fuel, and 14 hours.
