This was an offshore trip with FreeDivers Zac Cooper, Colton Causey, and Vince Messina, all from Pensacola. Also onboard fishing was Sanna and Gym Oliveira from Biloxi. We headed East where it was opening day for Alabama and the boats were out in full force. We started fishing at a spot where there were 8 other boats but Sanna managed to put a 22 pounder in the boat as our first fish! The Spillway had been opened several times and the area was flooded with lots of fresh water making up 20 feet of the surface and created a very strong current running South. We made our first stop on Super Pyramid 17 but the current was so strong we ended up setting anchor and positioning over it. It was a big current challenge and too much for the Freedivers. I made a drop using Scuba and poked a beautiful 32 pounder. We then headed South where eventually we crossed a tideline with lots of sargassum and clear water on the South side of it with no current. We fished some spots and then went over to VK-340 for some Mangrove and AP (African Pompano) action. The Freedivers loved it and I had a great dive as well, although we pissed off some fishermen that were tied up to the rig. We anchored to the side of the Rig and tried to stay out of their way, but they were not happy at all. Too many boats out on this opening day. Our largest Mangrove was 14 pounds and the largest AP was 38 pounds. A great day on the water that encompassed 133 miles, 93 gallons of fuel, and 14 hours.
