This was a Charter to Neptune Spar (Beer Can Rig) with Jennifer Day, Omar Vasquez, and Janzen Hembree. My son Ben worked the Deck. It was mostly a dive charter but we always bring some rods and we put them to work during our surface intervals. In fact, Ben worked the Tiagra 30 perfectly as we drifted away from Neptune after eating our Hot Lunches. Hot Lunches? Yes, that's what the Rig Crew provided after asking us to inspect around the rig for a suspected leak. Ben got Janzen to start chuming and Ben put his hooked chum piece into the mix. It worked perfectly as Ben got hooked up on a nice Yellowfin. Of course, we did not know what it was and after 30 minutes of fighting, I went down to see if it was Shark or Tuna. After verification, Ben fought a total of about an hour to land the Brute. While many of the big yachts we observe out there might not think a great deal of the catch, we were very excited. All this on the birthday of his Grandpa who passed in 2003. Jennifer was new to spearfishing and tried out Black Betty. She shot an Almaco Jack and says she is hooked. Then on our way north we encountered a waterspout with was exciting too. We also sighted a Sea Turtle and many Sharks. Omar bagged some Scamp Grouper and on the way in, Janzen caught a couple Red Snapper. It was a great fun day that encompassed 191 miles, 15 hours, and 115 gallons of fuel.
