Trip to the East Shelf on October 6, 2012© Photos Posted by Mark Miller © Hi-Res Source
This was a trip for my son Ben(18) who hasn't been able to make many of my trips lately. He brought his brothers Paul(17), and Luke(15), along with friends Dalton McQueen(18), Alec Newton(19), and Patrick Reynolds(20). We went to the East along the Continental Shelf near the infamous Oil Rig Petronius. Actually about 6 miles north of there at MP255 & Cutoff Unocal Rig MP254 (29°21.750'N 87°48.330'). We had some great dives before heading back to the northwest. After a few miles running, we saw some Tuna crashing some flying fish and decided to drop some trolling gear. Paul hooked up on this nice Hoo which ended up weighing close to 70 pounds.
Then we stopped on a sunken submarine and Luke shot his first Amberjack using Black Betty. It was a long fun filled day which included both sunrise and sunset pictures. It encompassed 183 nautical miles, 16.5 hours, and 119.2 gallons of fuel.
