Paul Miller's SCUBA Diving Checkout - Destin Weekend - Sept. 16-17, 2006© Photos by Mark Miller © Hi-Res Source
This was a weekend in Destin, Florida so Paul could complete his SCUBA Ceritfication checkout Dive with The Dive Shop and his Instructor Betty Best. Because of PADI requirements for junior divers, Paul had to stay above 40 feet of depth which limited our dive to the Jetties, but as you can see from the pictures, there was plenty to see. Since there was a
Shark Tournament going on, we were able to observe some of those catches too. We also checked out some of the Charter Boat's Catches as they came in to port. Then we took a cruise on Boogie's Glass Bottom Boat, which surprisingly did not even cruise close enough to the Jetties to get a view. Best we could see were StingRays along the sand bottom. They also picked up a crab trap and pulled a shrimp net catching pin fish and such for the kids to checkout. A Plane was also pulling a banner to protest the shark tournament which only killed 11 Sharks Total. I don't understand the protest cause my experience shows many more sharks around today than 10 years ago. It's hard to catch any quality fish thru all the sharks. In addition, people are still being injured and killed by sharks every year. The photographer at the tournament said the 765 pound winning Tiger brought in the first day was caught just 500 yards off the beach! The Tiger seen below was 480 pounds, caught by Cherie Mills to win the Female's Division. Her catch was protested and she had to take a polygraph test to prove she did in fact catch the Shark. Great Job Cherie on both rounds of battle. Overall, we had a great Father/Son weekend. The Dive Shop in D'Iberville and Betty did such a great job.
