Ryan Oestmann, from Rapid City, South Dakota, took a trip with me back in May. This time he brought his friend Jay Bruner, from Biloxi. We had 2 others bail on the trip, so I brought all 3 of my boys, Ben, Paul, and Luke. We wanted to make a long run to Blue Water, so we started at 5AM and headed for the Salt Dome area. We stopped briefly at a spot in FH-13 and quickly boxed 3 or 4 keeper snapper. We stopped at a rig and caught some live hard tails about 15 miles from our destination. Once on the dome, we put down some live hard tail as well as cut bait, but action was very minimal. We then went to some of the nearby rigs and still could not pick up any AJs, however we did get a 26 pound 'Cuda to strike. Making a dive on the rig revealed no decent sized AJs. We then went to the southern most rig in about 680 feet of water and tried to pick up some Tuna. We only got one Blackfin to hit and he was attacked before we could get him to the boat. Sharks were thick and we had some fun hand feeding them off the side of the boat. Then Ryan decided to just grab them by the tail and kicked off some fun Shark Grabling, as I called it, or Shark Wrangling, as Ryan called it. I plan to post some captured video of this later, so check back. We then headed further north to another rig where my 2 oldest sons made a dive and we picked up a few lobster. Working even further north, we fished some well heads and wrecks. Ryan managed to back a 17 pound snapper and about an 8 pound Bull Mahi. Then Jay trumped that with a 16 pound Cow Mahi. It was a pretty fun filled trip, but quite long, encompassing 170.5 miles and 16 hours.
